I've been playing Monster Hunter since 4U and each version, it included, has had a story. Every one of them has had a story. The expansions for Generations, World and Rise added more to the story instead of just dropping in a bunch of quests. A story has always been part of the Monster Hunter games. I've never heard someone say, "this story is too much and is in my way". I have heard, the story needs more to it.
That being said, I read an article that claims having a story in Monster Hunter Wilds will be a controversial change to the series. Really? Where did you get that from?
Although a somewhat controversial change, Monster Hunter Wilds has decided to tell more of a story, with a main character that talks in cutscenes and dialogue options when talking to NPCs.

WTF?!? Are you serious? Have you even played a Monster Hunter game? This has to be AI scraping more non-sense from somewhere.
There are stories in all of the Monster Hunter games. MH Worlds tied it's story to the start of quests. You could finish the cutscene and go straight into the quest or end it, prepare and tackle the quest after. This is not new or controversial, it's Monster Hunter!
...Wilds a more RPG heavy title compared to its predecessors. This could do a lot for Wilds' accessibility and popularity, even if it's controversial for returning players, but MH Wilds' more adventurous monster designs are a definite plus, especially after the reveal of the Nu Urda.
Same AI generated (poorly generated) article as the other quote
Again, how is having a story controversial for returning players? Or are you saying the controversy is with the "adventurous monster designs"? Are you even trying? Did you even fact check what ChatGPT gave you? Can you point to the controversy anywhere on the internet?
